Machining guidelines - Milling

The majority of plastics are easy to machine. Depending on the type of plastic involved, there are various details that have to be taken into due account.

In a milling process, the tool (at a high rotational speed) performs a circular cutting movement. And the feed movement is performed at right angles to the rotary axis by the workpiece. Due to the continual interruption to the cut, comma-shaped chips are formed. Milling is classed as a multiple-blade cutting process. A distinction is drawn between face-milling (frontal milling) and circumferential milling (side-milling).

Note:

  • Metalloid cutting tools should sometimes be preheated up to 120 °C
  • Use only pure water with liquid cooling (tension cracks may accur)
  • Amorphous materials should be annealed (do not use oily cooling agents)
